So many people have changed jobs and even in their new jobs they aren't sure if it's the right one. As Ann Hiatt from the Harvard Business Review once pointed out, "a major differentiator in both longevity and joy at work is value alignment."

When we choose work and life according to our values, there is less dissatisfaction. There would be more fulfilment. Values alignment requires work, and it doesn't happen passively.

She offers these questions:

  1. What do you want to learn and contribute in the next phase of your career?
  2. Who do you want to serve and how?
  3. What pace do you want to achieve your goals?

I asked myself these questions 10 years ago when I made the switch to coaching.

I knew in the next phase of my career I specifically wanted to focus on working with people, not in processes or projects. I wanted to work with people, specifically corporate professionals, in a disciplined way - with structure, support, and accountability - to help them develop personally and expand in their careers and in professional leadership.

The pace at which I sought to achieve my career goals was not met at the rate I had planned as I became a mother and a full time caregiver to my children. However, as my choices were aligned to my values, my roles give me purpose and fulfilment. Pace became secondary.

My hope for you is that as you think about your career, you will honor your values. Values are like lights to guide your path. I hope you will find alignment to them, and that you seek out the support and encouragement you need.

If you’d like to find out more about your values and how to be true to them, I’d love to hear from you. Please send me a note on the contact form here.
